Insulation-Weatherization

Fall & Winter Pest Control & Pest Prevention Tips

As the days get shorter, the weather gets cooler and there’s that familiar smell of Pumpkin Spice in the air, it reminds us that it’s time to start thinking about getting the home buttoned up to handle the long cold winter months ahead of us here in the Greater St. Louis Area.  The Farmers Almanac is calling for a colder than normal winter in the Midwest for 2019-2020.

Unfortunately, there are others thinking about finding a nice warm and cozy home to move into for the winter months too!  Small critters such as mice, squirrels, rats, raccoons, spiders, cockroaches and other pests are looking for a safe haven.  These pests can become more than just a nuisance if they find a way inside.  Rodents can contaminate food, spreading disease and damage electrical wires, which may lead to a fire.  Cockroaches are known to trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children.  And, some spiders may bite if they are disturbed.

You may be wondering what you can do to prevent these pesky pests from getting inside your home?

Here are some things you can do to prevent wintertime pests:

  • Year-Round Pest Control Maintenance
    • From sickness to disease to damage and disgust, pests can be disastrous for many reasons.
      • Even if you don’t have a pest problem now, pest prevention is always cheaper and easier than pest reaction. We highly recommend signing up for a year-round maintenance plan that fits your needs.
      • Holper’s can have our Certified Efficiency Analyst come out and do an inspection. Learn how to keep pest and animals out while maintaining the efficiency of your home. Learn the A – Attic, B – Basement, C’s – Crawl Space of insulation and weatherization from Holper’s!
  • Keep your Yard Maintained
    • Properly landscape to avoid providing pest harborage sites. Keep branches and shrubs trimmed.
      • Clean leaves and other debris from your gutters to prevent standing water, the perfect breeding ground for many pests.
      • Keep basements, attics and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
      • Keep all garbage covered or in a container to discourage animals from scavenging for food in the winter months.
      • Store your Firewood at least 20 feet away from your house. Five feet is a minimum distance.  Keep the firewood on racks of some kind, to: don’t let it rest on the ground.
  • Pest Control Inside your Home
    • Keeping your home clean will go a long way to preventing a pest invasion.
      • Seal your Doors & Windows! Install door sweeps and repair damage screen.  Torn window screen and cracks under doors are an ideal entry point for household pests.
      • Filler larger gaps and holes inside your home with pieces of steel wool, as pests are deterred away from the roughness of the steel fibers, especially rodents who are unable to gnaw through the material.
      • Inspect the outside of your home for easy access points. Seal any cracks and crevices with silicone caulk, paying special attention to areas where utility pipes enter the structure.
      • Screen attic vents, openings to chimneys and any other areas where homes may be open to the outdoors – mail slots, for instance, or pet doors.
      • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows. There are easy ways to keep pest (and cold air) out of the house.

Summer Pest Control STL

Summer Pest Tips

Summer Pest Control & Pest Prevention Tips

Throughout the summer months, many pests such as ants, flies, gnats, roaches, wasps and even rodents are much more active. You may be wondering what you can do to prevent these pesky pests from getting inside your home?
Here are some things you can do to prevent common summertime pests:

  • Year-Round Pest Control Maintenance
    • From sickness to disease to damage and disgust, pests can be disastrous for many reasons.
    • Even if you don’t have a pest problem now, pest prevention is always cheaper and easier than pest reaction. We highly recommend signing up for a year-round maintenance plan that fits your needs.
  • Keep your Yard & Garden Areas Maintained
    • Cut the grass on a regular basis, remove weeds and trim bushes. This will reduce the opportunities for pests to nest and multiply.
      • Drain any areas of standing water. This may be in a bird bath, a child’s wading pool or just an area of your lawn prone to flooding. Standing water serves as an incubator for many species of pest, so simply removing the water will lead to a reduction in the number of pests in your vicinity.
      • Divert rainwater away from the house
      • Don’t let your sprinklers spray directly toward the foundation of your home
      • Throw away overripe fruits and vegetables in your garden
      • Keep all garbage covered or in a container to discourage the growth of flies and other pests. This is especially crucial during summer months when the warm weather spurs many pests to greater action.
      • Store your Firewood away from your house. Five feet is a minimum distance. Termites love firewood, so you are essentially giving them a spot to collect themselves before assaulting your home! Keep the firewood on racks of some kind, too: don’t let it rest on the ground.
  • Pest Control Inside your Home
    • Keeping your house clean will also go a long way to preventing a pest invasion.
      • Seal your Doors & Windows! It doesn’t matter which of the common summertime insects you’re talking about: regardless of whether its mosquitoes, wasps or even spiders, keeping your doors and windows sealed is an effective ways to keep them out. Check for gaps in your doors and holes in your window screens and repair them as needed.
      • Seal all food items such as sugar or flour that may attract pests in airtight containers.
      • Sweep, vacuum and clean on a regular basis to prevent crumbs and/or sticky spills as these things are highly appealing to pest.
      • Don’t leave pet food dishes out for long periods of time
      • Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink
      • The most important don’t is…don’t try to remove a pest infestation on your own. It may be dangerous and inefficient to try to deal with it on your own.

Spring Pest Tips

Spring Pest Tips

Spring Pest Control & Pest Prevention Tips

Days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and those springtime pests are on the move.  As we begin preparing for the spring season and nature is bursting back to life, it’s time to start thinking about pest control.   Common pests that return with new vigor in the spring includes bees, ants, spiders, mosquitos, flies, silverfish, cockroaches, rodents and more.

Here are some things you can do to prevent common springtime pests:

  • Year-Round Pest Control Maintenance
    • From sickness to disease to damage and disgust, pests can be disastrous for many reasons.
    • Even if you don’t have a pest problem now, pest prevention is always cheaper and easier than pest reaction. We highly recommend signing up for a year-round maintenance plan that fits your needs.
  • Store and Dispose of Food/Waste Properly
    • Animals need food, water and shelter to survive. Gardens, garbage, standing water and pet food can all attract pests
      • Follow proper cleaning and food storage processes
      • Keep trash bins tightly covered with tight-fitting, spring-loaded lids and be sure to empty them frequently
      • Store pet food in a sealed container indoors
      • Add fencing around your garden & build raised beds with a cover
    • Regular inspections and reports from Holper’s Pest & Animal Solutions will provide the information necessary for specific strategies.
  • Control Moisture
    • Even a small pool of water or leaking pipes can provide enough water to attract springtime pests. High humidity aids egg production with pests.
      • Repair plumbing leaks as soon as possible
      • Get rid of standing water, such as tires, bird baths and pool covers
      • Trim tall grasses
      • Keep gutters and downspouts clean and clear

      • Keep your home well-ventilated and dry, especially basements, attics and crawl spaces

  • Inspect the Perimeter and Seal Entryways
    • Openings in your home provide the perfect entrance for unwanted guests. Inspect your property for potential entrance points for pests. Pay close attention to areas where utilities enter (plumbing, electrical, HVAC)
      • Seal any gaps and cracks around the building
      • Repair any broken screens and windows
      • Replace any aging or worn weather-stripping
      • Trim back trees and shrubs that are touching your structure, hanging over your roof or near your roofline
      • Keep pallets stored off the ground
      • Never leave any exterior facing doors open
    • Use weatherproof caulk for any gaps and cracks smaller than ½ inch. For any gaps and holes larger than that, use expandable foam sealant
    • If you notice any pest or signs of a pest presence, such as mud tubes and rotted wood, contact Holper’s Pest & Animal Solutions right away!
  • Clean, Clean, Clean
    • Its spring – time for some cleaning. In addition to immediately cleaning up any food spills and making sure food items are properly stored, take some time to do full spring inspection and cleaning.
      • Immediately clean up any food preparation
      • Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink (at least rinse or soak them)
      • Never store food on the floor
      • Repair cracks, holes, broken screens and other methods of entry
      • Make sure trash is regularly and properly disposed of
      • Store food products in sealed containers at proper temperature
      • Make sure there is a routine cleaning policy (sweeping, mopping, drain cleaning, waste removal, etc.)
      • Conduct a deep cleaning and decluttering at least twice a year
    • Snakes, bugs and insects love to hide in trash and debris. Take some time to clear away all the clutter from your property, such as brush piles and excess leaves.  Don’t neglect the areas under porches, decks and stairs.
  • Contact Holper’s Pest & Animal Solutions as soon as you notice a pest
    • Pests rarely travel alone. Where there’s one, there’s many.  Even if you see just one of these pests this spring, contact Holper’s to take care of it before it turns into a full-blown infestation.
    • Remember, the best way to maintain a pest-free environment for your home or business is by partnering with a pest professional. Call us at 314 544-7378 (pest). We will give you peace of mind & your home back!
